Top 5 Ketone Test Strips Review – Precise Accuracy, Fast Reading

Ketone..What??

Ketones are by product of breaking down fats & they can be used by the body as an alternative source of energy to sugar. This process is also known as ketosis.
The state of ketosis means that the body has made a switch from depending on carbohydrates for energy to burning fats for fuel. This means not only dietary fats (avocado, peanuts, olive oil, guacamole, deep-fried pig ears), but also all the jiggly bits around your waist, clearly a desirable state for anyone looking to shed extra weight.

Ketones may be produced as part of weight loss, for example if you’re following certain type of diets i.e: the ketogenic, atkins, paleo, and low carb. You will see very impressive fat loss result by following those types of diet. However bear in mind, too many ketones in your body can be counterproductive, dangerous and life threatening. Too little, means you’re not doing it right.

The most optimal range for ketosis is 2.0-8.0 mmol/L.

If a high level of ketones is produced (usually Beyond 10.0 mmol/L), this can cause the blood to become acidic which can lead to illness and even potential danger to organs if not treated in time. This state is referred to as diabetic ketoacidosis. In other words, you want to be in ketosis, NOT in ketoacidosis state.

Using Urine test to Measure Ketones

Excess ketone bodies are excreted via urine (acetoacetate) and can be measured with urine test by using ketone test strip. This is the fastest, most convenient, and most affordable way to measure your ketone level. Not to mention it’s quite accurate too especially if you pick one from this ketone urine strips list below.

How To Read Ketone Strips?

• Pass the test end of the small paper strip directly through your urine stream (alternatively, collect urine in a clean, dry container and dip the strip in afterwards).
• Shake off any excess, then wait 15 seconds.
• Compare the color to the guide on the side of the bottle to find out how “deep” your level of ketosis is.
• Deeper purples generally indicate higher levels of ketones. Don’t take this to mean that darker is necessarily better – plenty of people find low-to-mid level ketosis to be a “sweet spot” for linear fat loss and muscle gain while feeling energized

Remember, the desired range for ketosis is 2.0-8.0 mmol/L. If your number is above that, maybe you’re overdoing it and need to calm down a little bit by introducing higher carb intake, if your number is too low then do the opposite; cut your carb for several weeks (around 50gr/day for 2 weeks) then repeat the test.

For your information, there are other methods you can use to know whether you’re in the state of ketosis or not:
1. Blood Ketone Meter
The most accurate way to measure ketone bodies beta-bydroxybutryate (BHB), but this is very pricey.

2. Breath Testing – “Breathalyzer”
A non-invasive & accurate way to measure breath acetone concentration. Acetone is one of the ketone bodies that results from a break down of acetoacetate. However this method is not very popular and not as convenient as the urine test.

3. Observation
Perhaps the least accurate way to know if you’re in ketosis or not.
In general When you are in ketosis, you may smell of acetone. This could be sensed in your breath, sweat or urine. You will have this “fruity” smelling breath. If you detect any of these signs, you are more than likely in ketosis.
